Oxidation-Reduction Reactions in Chemistry

Students in Mr. Bunger’s Chemistry class are studying oxidation-reduction reactions. The reaction students studied in the lab this week involved potassium permanganate which has a deep purple color and another solution containing iron. The purple permanganate solution becomes colorless when it contacts the iron solution due to an oxidation-reduction reaction. One of the key indicators of a chemical reaction is a change in color. The students know the reaction is complete when they see a faint purple color persist in the iron solution. The data they collect can then be used to determine the concentration of permanganate ion in the original solution. It requires a keen eye and attention to detail in order to obtain accurate results, and our students did just that!
