Lady Guard finish 1-3 at Edgewood Tournament

91èÏÈÉú played four games in three days at the Edgewood Tournament, which began Thursday and concluded Saturday at Edgewood High School.

The Lady Guard bounced back from a tourney opening loss to Alvarado (44-36) on Thursday to edge Cumby (33-32). 91èÏÈÉú followed that with a loss Friday night to Scurry-Rosser (44-15). On Saturday, the Lady Guard and Kaufman went back and forth with 91èÏÈÉú ultimately being edged out by three points (35-32).

In Thursday’s opener against Alvarado, 91èÏÈÉú went into the locker room tied 16-16, but a cold third quarter — Lady Guard were outscored 10-5 — was the difference. 91èÏÈÉú attempted to rally back in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback in an eight-point loss.

Kaitlynn Rhea and Lauren Eden each finished with nine points for 91èÏÈÉú with AD Kuechle delivering a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Half of 91èÏÈÉú’s points came from beyond the arc with Eden and Rhea knocking down three treys apiece.

On Friday morning against Cumby, the Lady Guard endured the same cold streak in the third quarter, which turned a 14-11 halftime lead into a 25-18 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

91èÏÈÉú’s comeback started immediately, but the Lady Guard still trailed by 2 points, 32-30 with time running out. The Lady Guard got the ball to Eden and she drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give 91èÏÈÉú a one-point win.

Eden finished with a team-high 12 points with Rhea finishing one point shy of a double-double, delivering nine points and 10 rebounds.

Later Friday evening against Scurry-Rosser, 91èÏÈÉú started slow and never recovered. The Lady Guard trailed 18-2 at the end of the first quarter and 32-6 at halftime.

Kuechle led the team in scoring with seven points with 91èÏÈÉú committing 22 turnovers while shooting 15 percent in the loss.

In their final game of the tournament, 91èÏÈÉú again fell behind in the second half because of third-quarter struggles. The Lady Guard trailed 15-12 at halftime, but were outscored 13-7 in the third quarter to go into the final frame with a nine point deficit.

The comeback was on again with 91èÏÈÉú outscoring Kaufman 13-7, but this one fell a little short in a three-point loss.

The Lady Guard are back on the hardwood Friday at the Cross Roads Tournament.
