Helping 7th Graders Understand the US Constitution

This week our 7th grade students completed their study of the civil war, an event that caused both the North and South to question details within the US Constitution in regards to sectionalism, states’ rights, slavery, and tariffs. To better understand the “fine print” of the US Constitution, students participated in a simulation about the creation of a national constitution for a fictional country called Merrimac. They examined various points of view, weighed the positives and negatives for their decisions, and participated in multiple democratic voting sessions. Everyone had a great time through this interactive, engaging simulation that allowed students to have a better understanding of the US Constitution and the US Bill of Rights.
