Experimenting with Motion in Physics
In physics lab, students are learning how to read graphs of position versus time and velocity versus time. Our computer software randomly generates a graph of position versus time and each lab group has to discuss how to direct their lab partner to walk in order to recreate the graph. After coming up with their instructions, each lab group tests their idea by having their lab partner walk in front of a motion detector, and then comparing their partner’s graph to the generated graph. Students are then able to see a real world instance of how the slope of a position versus time graph describes the velocity of a person’s movement.
