Earthquake Lab

6th graders started to review for their final  exam by doing an earthquake lab to review how seismic waves travel through the earth.  They built skyscrapers out of starbursts, sugar cubes and gel candy.  They then simulated a tremor and watched the effects and then a major quake and observed the differences.  Real life applications came in discussion after the lab about how these candies could represent different building materials.  Students observed a difference in how the materials responded to the simulated quakes.
