Dual Credit = Safeguard

From the desk of Celia Tucker, Academic Counselor:

鈥淚 wonder if my Tyler Junior College and Jacksonville College credits will transfer to the college I will be attending鈥

If you have ever had questions about whether or not to take a class as Dual Credit (earning both 91猫先生 credit for graduation and also college credit at the same time), you are not alone. While Dual Credit is not a requirement for students, we like to provide the option. Most students report total elation after attending their college鈥檚 new student conferences and realizing that many of their freshman year course requirements have already been met through Dual Credit. There are rare times that students do learn that because of their particular major, their college鈥檚 specific guidelines and requirements, or specific college policies and grade requirements that their courses do not transfer. As one parent so perfectly stated recently, 鈥淪o taking courses for Dual Credit is really a safeguard.鈥

Yes! Perfectly said.

Because colleges are so very different in what they do and do not do, talking to each one of them individually about their Dual Credit policies is absolutely the best thing for students to do. Comments and resources from recent discussions with Tyler Junior College and Jacksonville College are below:

Jacksonville College:

Transferring credits are the institutions鈥 decision but since we are a part of ICUT, SACSCOC and Texas Higher Education Coordinating聽Board聽models of transfer have caused us little issues.聽 Issues with transfer credits occur when students choose majors that have no flexibility with the common core.聽

In other words checking with the transferring institution is the key.

Tyler Junior College:

Honestly, it depends on the students鈥 major. The student should take the 91猫先生 Dual Credit List of courses and contact the universities he/she is interested in attending to find out for sure. I can tell you that ENGL 1301/1302 should transfer to any college. Typically, the ones in question are the BIOL and MATH courses and that depends on the students major whether it transfers in as an elective or part of their degree plan. I hope you find the following links helpful. Each college should have something similar.
