91èÏÈÉú Vision and Hearing Screening
From the desk of Suzan Chadwell, 91èÏÈÉú School Nurse:
Vision and Hearing Screening is currently in progress at 91èÏÈÉú by Registered Nurses who are also trained screeners. In Texas, individuals who screen children for vision and hearing problems must be certified through the Texas Department of Human Services. When a student with a potential problem is identified, the State requires that a second screening be completed approximately 2 weeks later. If the potential problem is consistently present on the second screening, the student’s parents are notified and a professional referral is initiated. The State considers the referral to be completed when the School Nurse receives the referral back from the student’s health care provider saying that the potential problem has been addressed. Vision and Hearing Screening is a brief test to determine whether a student’s vision and hearing falls within the normal range. Screening answers only one question: does the student show possible problems that indicate the need for further assessment? Screening is a quick and cost effective way to identify those who may have a problem and need a more detailed evaluation by their health care provider. The State requires screening for children in Pre-K, KG, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th grade.
We are so excited to be able to provide this service for our students. The children are enjoying the Vision and hearing game. They are wearing pirate patches and airline captain headphones. They receive stickers and prizes for playing. A special thank you goes to our volunteer Gayle Craig RN, who has donated her time to help me complete the screenings.
